The concept of percentages dates back to ancient Roman mathematics, where traders calculated tax and profit using fractions of 100. The word percent comes from the Latin “per centum”, meaning “by the hundred.”
By the 17th century, percentages became essential in banking, commerce, and statistics, and today they are used in everything from exam scores to inflation rates and scientific research.
Example: 25% of 200
25%=10025 25100×200=50\frac{25}{100} \times 200 = 5010025 ×200=50
Convert percentage to decimal:
25%=0.25 0.25×200=500.25 \times 200 = 500.25×200=50
10% of a number = move decimal one place left
1% = move decimal two places left
Then multiply.
Example:
10% of 350 = 35
5% = half of 10% = 17.5
15% = 35 + 17.5 = 52.5

Comparing two values fairly
Percentage difference compares how far two numbers are apart relative to their average value.
Percentage increase only measures growth. Percentage change can show both increase and decrease.
Because percentages show change relative to where you started.
Yes. If a value doubles, that is a 100% increase. Triples = 200% increase.
Use percentage difference when comparing two values without treating one as the “original.”
